Song of Solomon 7 (Listen)

7:1 How beautiful are your feet in sandals,
    O noble daughter!
Your rounded thighs are like jewels,
the work of a master hand.
Your navel is a rounded bowl
    that never lacks mixed wine.
Your belly is a heap of wheat,
    encircled with lilies.
Your two breasts are like two fawns,
    twins of a gazelle.
Your neck is like an ivory tower.
Your eyes are pools in Heshbon,
    by the gate of Bath-rabbim.
Your nose is like a tower of Lebanon,
    which looks toward Damascus.
Your head crowns you like Carmel,
    and your flowing locks are like purple;
a king is held captive in the tresses.
How beautiful and pleasant you are,
O loved one, with all your delights!
Your stature is like a palm tree,
and your breasts are like its clusters.
I say I will climb the palm tree
and lay hold of its fruit.
Oh may your breasts be like clusters of the vine,
and the scent of your breath like apples,
and your mouth like the best wine.
It goes down smoothly for my beloved,
    gliding over lips and teeth.
10   I am my beloved’s,
and his desire is for me.

11   Come, my beloved,
let us go out into the fields
    and lodge in the villages;
12   let us go out early to the vineyards
and see whether the vines have budded,
whether the grape blossoms have opened
and the pomegranates are in bloom.
There I will give you my love.
13   The mandrakes give forth fragrance,
and beside our doors are all choice fruits,
  new as well as old,
which I have laid up for you, O my beloved.

Devotional:

How beautiful you are and how pleasant, my love, with such delights! (Song of Songs 7:6)

Here, we read yet another lengthy and intimate description of the wife, offered by the husband, that culminates in physical intimacy. In fact, it seems to be even more detailed and passionate than previous descriptions. Not only may we be surprised to read these words in the Bible, but we may wonder if yet another iteration is needed in this book. The repetition and intensification of these descriptions, however, point to the reality that love and intimacy grows over time when nurtured within a marriage that reflects God’s designs and intentions for the marital union. This is in stark contrast to the picture our culture paints of marriages growing dull and unhappy over time. Let us look to God’s Word rather than popular culture for our guidance, and let us reflect a different – and better – picture of love.

Pray It: Father, help those who I know who are married (if married – myself included) resist having their marriages conform to the ideas and perspective of the world around us and instead be transformed by the power of your word, growing in love and showing the world a beautiful picture of marriage that you have created. Amen.
