Psalm 82 (Listen)
82:1 God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
2 “How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
they walk about in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 I said, “You are gods,
sons of the Most High, all of you;
7 nevertheless, like men you shall die,
and fall like any prince.”
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth;
for you shall inherit all the nations!
Devotional:
Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute. (Psalm 82:3)
God has overwhelming compassion for those who are weak and afflicted. We, His church, are called to care for the weak, fatherless, afflicted and destitute. How do we do that? Not out of obligation, but out of a heart of compassion. It is so easy to become numb to the problems in our world and wrapped up in ourselves, but God promises to change our heart of stone to a heart of flesh. Will you ask Him today to give you His heart of compassion?
Pray It: Father, I praise you for your concern for those who are weak and afflicted, for helping me and others in our time of need. Create in me this same heart of compassion for others so that I may honor you and reflect your character in this world. Amen.
