Psalm 29 (Listen)

29:1   Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
    ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
  Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
    worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.
  The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the LORD, over many waters.
  The voice of the LORD is powerful;
    the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
  The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
    the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
  He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
    and Sirion like a young wild ox.
  The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
  The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
    the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
  The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth
    and strips the forests bare,
    and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
10   The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
    the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
11   May the LORD give strength to his people!
    May the LORD bless his people with peace!

Devotional:

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness (Psalm 29:1-2 CSB).

This Psalm talks a lot about the power of God’s voice and what His voice does, but the Psalm begins by calling the heavenly beings – the angels – to ascribe (give, attribute) glory and honor to God. We, too, can worship and glorify God…and we have reasons to! Not only is His voice powerful, but He is enthroned as King forever (verse 10). Because of who He is, He can indeed give strength to His people and bless us with peace (verse 11). As we remember what God can do, let’s join with all creation and worship the Lord today.

Pray it: Father, help me join with the angels who sing your praises and proclaim your majesty. You alone are worthy of my praise because of your matchless power and gracious rule. Amen.
