Psalm 20 (Listen)

20:1   May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble!
May the name of the God of Jacob protect you!
May he send you help from the sanctuary
and give you support from Zion!
May he remember all your offerings
and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah
May he grant you your heart’s desire
    and fulfill all your plans!
May we shout for joy over your salvation,
and in the name of our God set up our banners!
May the LORD fulfill all your petitions!
  Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with the saving might of his right hand.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
  They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand upright.
  O LORD, save the king!
May he answer us when we call.

Devotional:

Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses, but we take pride in the name of the Lord our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand firm (Psalm 20:7-8 CSB).

When trouble comes, where do you turn? Some turn to advice columns or to their own ingenuity. Others might turn to old, destructive habits such as overeating or drinking too much. A doctor, counselor, or pastor might offer support, but Psalm 20 reminds us that we should first turn to God. “Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses, but we take pride in the name of the Lord our God.” What challenge or problem are you facing today? Have you turned to God for help?

Pray it: Father, I confess that I often look to things of this world for help in times of trouble rather than to you. Help me to turn first to you for help and then to use the various means of wisdom and aids you have provided…not as saviors, but as gifts and tools from you to help me. Amen.
